Padel Racket Weight Explained: Light vs Medium vs Heavy
Pick up two padel rackets — one at 350g, one at 380g. The difference is only 30 grams, about the weight of aAA battery. But on court, across a two-hour match, that 30g changes everything: how fast you react at the net, how hard you smash, and how your arm feels the next morning.
Racket weight is the most important spec that nobody talks about enough. Everyone obsesses over shape and brand, but weight is what you feel on every single shot.
The Three Weight Classes
Lightweight: 345–360g
Light rackets prioritize speed and comfort. They’re easier to swing, faster to maneuver at the net, and dramatically reduce arm fatigue during long sessions.
Best for:
- Beginners learning proper swing mechanics
- Players with a history of tennis elbow or arm issues
- Defensive players who rely on quick reactions
- Anyone playing 3+ hour sessions
Trade-off: Less mass means less power on smashes and deep shots. You’ll need to generate pace through technique rather than letting the racket do the work.
Midweight: 360–375g
The Goldilocks zone. Midweight rackets balance power and maneuverability — heavy enough to feel stable on volleys, light enough to react quickly at the net.
Best for:
- Intermediate players who want one racket for everything
- All-court players mixing defense and attack
- Anyone unsure which weight class to pick (start here)
Trade-off: You don’t get the raw power of a heavy racket or the effortless speed of a lightweight. But for most players, the balance is worth it.
Heavyweight: 375–385g+
Heavy rackets reward physically strong players with devastating power. More mass behind the ball means smashes come off harder and volleys feel more solid. But the cost is real — after 90 minutes, your arm will feel the difference.
Best for:
- Advanced players with consistent technique
- Power-focused net players who finish points aggressively
- Players with good physical conditioning
Trade-off: Fatigue sets in faster. If your technique isn’t solid, a heavy racket punishes you twice — once with tired arms and once with mis-hits from slowing down.
The Arm Health Factor
Here’s what most buyers don’t consider: racket weight + core hardness = total arm impact.
A 380g racket with a soft core might actually feel more comfortable than a 365g racket with a hard core. The weight transfers energy to the ball; the core determines how much vibration comes back to you.
If arm health matters to you (and it should), prioritize lighter weight AND a softer core. Both work together.
Which Weight Is Right for You?
Ask yourself two questions:
- How often do you play? Once a week → lightweight. Three times a week → midweight. Every day → you already know what works for you.
- Where do you stand? Mostly at the net attacking → mid to heavy. Mostly at the baseline defending → light to mid.
If you’re still unsure, start with midweight (360–370g). It’s the safest default and you’ll know within a few matches whether to go lighter or heavier next time.
The right weight makes padel feel effortless. The wrong weight makes it feel like work. And the difference is personal — two players of the same height and build can prefer completely different weights based on swing speed, play style, and even court surface.
That’s the kind of matchmaking where a quick recommendation beats guessing.
